Carbon mirror housing

Carbon Mirror Housing — Baseline Visible-Carbon Cap Pair for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class W465 Gronos

On the new W465 G-Class, Mercedes refined the door-mirror module without changing its silhouette: the housing is still rectangular, still proudly upright, still unmistakably G-Wagen. What did change is the electronics package inside — a wider blind-spot indicator window, an updated motor/heater connector pinout, and a tighter tolerance on the mirror-glass datum. The Mansory Carbon mirror housing is the entry-point response: an OEM-shape carbon cap pair that swaps the painted plastic shell for hand-laid 2x2 twill while leaving every electrical and mechanical pathway exactly where the W465 expects to find it.

What "Baseline" Means In This Family

This part is intentionally the conservative member of the W465 mirror family. Within the Gronos catalogue there are two carbon housings: the baseline (this product) and the Carbon mirror housing II, the alternate variant. Drawing the line clearly:

  • Baseline (this product): OEM outline retained millimetre-for-millimetre. Same projection from the door pillar, same vertical height, same parking envelope. The upgrade lives in the material, not the shape.
  • Variant II: a re-sculpted alternate — different aero profile or finish family — for buyers who want the mirrors to read as a re-design rather than a re-skin.

If the rest of the build leans executive, restrained, or relies on factory body geometry to do the talking, the baseline housing is the right answer. The carbon shows; the proportions do not change.

Engineering — Hand-Laid Twill, OEM Pass-Throughs Captured

The shell is moulded around the OEM mirror frame as a direct cap replacement. Layup and cure mirror the rest of the visible-carbon parts on the W465 Gronos so the weave reads as one material across the vehicle:

  • Outer skin: 2x2 twill, 200 g/m², book-matched between the left and right cap so the weave centres mirror across the windscreen axis.
  • Inner laminate: 200 g/m² twill ply for torsional stiffness — the cap must resist door-edge knocks and high-speed buffet without flexing against the OEM clip seats.
  • Core: solid laminate. The shell is small and curved enough that honeycomb adds mass without buying useful stiffness.
  • Cure schedule: autoclave 130 °C / 6 bar / 6 hours. A short 80 °C / 4-hour post-cure stabilises the matrix before clear-coat.
  • Finish: two-pack UV-stable clear, gloss or matte. Matte is the more common pairing on European builds; gloss reads sharper under direct sun.
  • Mass per side: approximately 0.19-0.23 kg, slightly lighter than the OEM painted-plastic cap.

Three OEM features dictate the inner geometry of the cap, and all three are captured in the mould:

  • Motor and heater connector pass-through: the W465 mirror motor harness sits on a revised connector cluster behind the housing. The carbon shell is moulded with the connector clearance pocket pre-formed; the OEM harness clips back in without spacers or shims.
  • Blind-spot indicator window: the W465 BSM LED is wider than the W463A unit, with a longer prism. The carbon cap has the BSM aperture cut at the laminate stage and trimmed to OEM lens fitment; light output is unchanged.
  • Mirror-glass datum: the OEM glass aligns to a moulded datum lug on the inner cap wall. That lug is reproduced in the carbon shell so the glass plane stays exactly where the W465 calibrated it from the factory.

Sibling II — How They Differ

Where this baseline cap follows OEM proportions exactly, the Carbon mirror housing II is the alternate variant — a re-sculpted shell intended for builds that want the mirrors to participate visually in the aggression of the rest of the kit. The differentiation is honest:

  • Geometry: baseline keeps OEM outline; II is re-shaped (typically with extended outboard projection and a sharper trailing edge).
  • Finish family: baseline is offered in standard gloss/matte clear; II is the shell that more often pairs with body-colour-matched composite or forged-carbon options.
  • Build context: baseline pairs with restrained or executive builds; II pairs with Wide-Kit or motorsport-aesthetic builds where the larger projection visually balances broader fender geometry.
  • Aero: baseline matches OEM Cd; II adds a measurable but minor drag penalty in exchange for visual presence.

The two parts share electrical interfaces, install procedure, and warranty — choose by build language, not by spec sheet.

Installation Without Touching The Mirror Mechanism

The Mansory cap replaces only the outer shell. The mirror frame, glass, motor, heater element, BSM module, and harness all stay on the vehicle. Procedure:

  1. Release the four to six rear-edge spring clips that retain the OEM cap. On the W465 these are slightly stiffer than W463A; a plastic trim wedge avoids stress-whitening on the OEM cap if the buyer wants to keep the original.
  2. Lift the OEM cap free; unclip any captive harness attachments (the BSM lens and, on equipped trims, the puddle-lamp lens).
  3. Transfer the harness across to the carbon cap. The pre-moulded clearance pocket means no harness rework.
  4. Press the carbon cap onto the mirror frame, engaging clips one by one from the rear edge inward.
  5. Verify all electrical functions cycle: power fold, power adjust, heat, BSM illumination, turn-signal repeater, puddle lamp. Confirm there is no perceptible gap to the mirror frame.
  6. Total install time: about 30 minutes per side, doable on a driveway with hand tools.

Why The Mirrors Are A High-Impact Carbon Move On W465

  • Eye-level focal point: the W465's upright greenhouse puts the mirrors very close to driver eye height. The 2x2 weave is read at the closest natural viewing distance during normal driving, not glanced at from a distance.
  • Side-profile photography: in three-quarter shots — the angle most G-Class photographs are taken from — the mirrors catch directional light and disproportionately register the carbon material.
  • Material contrast against paint: against any solid body colour the cap reads as a small, deliberate carbon accent rather than a grafted-on cosmetic. Against a forged-carbon or fully visible-carbon body the cap blends into a continuous material expression.
  • Affordable carbon entry-point: as an early-stage upgrade for buyers spec'ing the W465 Gronos in phases, the baseline mirror housing introduces visible weave to the build for less outlay than hood, roof wing, or D-pillar work.

Pairing Inside The Gronos Kit

The baseline mirror housing reads strongest when the rest of the side profile speaks the same restrained material language. Strong pairings on the W465:

  • Carbon door handle with logo — the door-handle carbon sits a few inches below the mirror in side view; the two carbon zones tie the side-profile composition together at door level.
  • D-pillar cover — front-pillar carbon at the mirrors balances rear-pillar carbon at the D-zone, so the side profile is bracketed by visible weave at both ends.
  • Carbon trimbars — horizontal trimbar carbon along the lower body picks up the same weave family as the mirrors, keeping the build visually unified without leaning aggressive.

Maintenance And Compatibility

Day-to-day care is straightforward; long-term, the cap outlasts the clear coat by a wide margin:

  • Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft microfibre mitt. The curved cap surface is forgiving and rarely accumulates the swirl marks that flatter panels develop.
  • Quarterly ceramic spray sealant for UV protection. Mirrors live in direct sun whenever the vehicle is parked; the sealant is more important here than on shaded panels.
  • Inspect the leading edge once a year for cosmetic chips — door-edge knocks in tight parking are the only realistic damage vector.
  • If a cap is damaged badly enough to warrant replacement, the swap is the same 30-minute job as the original install. The mirror mechanism underneath is untouched.

Trim and body-spec compatibility:

  • All 2024+ W465 G-Class trims confirmed at order: G500, G580 with EQ Technology, G63 AMG.
  • Both standard-width and Wide-Kit body geometries — the cap mounts to the OEM mirror frame, which is unchanged across body widths.
  • Compatible with all Gronos visible-carbon and painted-composite body specs.
  • BSM-equipped and BSM-delete trims are both supported; the aperture is left blind on BSM-delete cars and trimmed at install if BSM is retrofitted later.

FAQ — Carbon Mirror Housing (Baseline)

Q: Does the cap change the W465 auto-fold timing or end-stop position?
A: No. Mass is essentially equal to OEM (slightly lighter), so the motor's torque-time profile reaches the same fold and unfold end-stops with no recalibration. The mirror module's own controller handles the cycle; the housing change is invisible to it.

Q: Will the BSM aperture line up exactly with the W465's wider blind-spot lens?
A: Yes. The aperture is moulded for the W465-specific BSM lens, not carried over from the W463A part. Lens fitment is flush with no light bleed at the edges.

Q: Can the baseline and Variant II be mixed left-and-right on the same car?
A: No. The two housings have different outboard projections and the side-profile composition would read as asymmetric. Each axle of the build is one housing family or the other.

Q: Is the weave book-matched across the pair?
A: Yes. The left and right caps are laid up from a paired pre-preg cut so the weave centre runs symmetrically about the vehicle's longitudinal axis. The pair is supplied matched and cannot be ordered as a single unit.

Q: Does the carbon shell affect mirror vibration at speed?
A: No measurable change. The OEM mirror frame carries the structural load; the cap is purely cosmetic. Highway-speed vibration behaviour and image stability in the glass are unchanged.
