Front Lip III — Mansory Carbon for Rolls-Royce Dawn

The Front Lip III is the most expressive of Mansory's three lip iterations for the Rolls-Royce Dawn, sitting below the lower air dam of the Mansory front bumper and giving the drophead a deeper, more theatrical leading edge. Where Lip II keeps a discreet, almost factory-adjacent profile, Lip III pushes the carbon line further forward and downward, framing the Pantheon grille with a low, deliberate horizon. Specified as part of the wider Mansory Body Kit for Rolls-Royce Dawn, this single carbon piece transforms the way the twin-turbo V12 coupé-without-a-roof presents itself at the porte-cochère — a quieter Spirit of Ecstasy still leads the procession, but now the prow beneath her has weight, depth and Mansory's signature autoclave gloss.

Construction & Materials

The Front Lip III is laid up as a single-piece composite shell rather than a flexible add-on strip. Mansory's atelier uses prepreg carbon-fibre sheet, draped over a CNC-milled positive form, then cured under heat and pressure inside an autoclave so that the resin matrix densifies uniformly and the weave remains optically straight from edge to edge. Compared with hand-laid wet-lay splitters, the result is dimensionally stable through summer-heat soak on a parked drophead and through the cold contractions of an open-air winter drive.

The visible face is finished in a deep-gloss two-component lacquer, polished and flatted between coats so that the weave appears suspended beneath glass rather than printed on the surface — the same lacquer protocol Mansory uses across the Dawn carbon programme to keep every panel in lockstep under sunlight.

  • Lay-up: prepreg 3K twill carbon, 2×2 weave, optical-grade outer ply
  • Cure: autoclave, controlled ramp and dwell with vacuum-bag debulk between plies
  • Wall thickness: ~2.4–3.0 mm across the visible blade, locally thicker at the mounting flange
  • Component weight: ~2.6–3.1 kg depending on bumper attachment hardware
  • Finish: Mansory deep-gloss UV-stabilised lacquer over clear-coat tie layer
  • Hardware: stainless threaded inserts moulded into the flange, OEM-style clip pockets, EPDM gasket strip on the mating face
  • Edges: hand-radiused, then re-lacquered to seal the weave terminus
  • Optional: satin-matt lacquer on request for owners running matte coachwork

Design & Visual Function

Lip III's job is theatrical first and aerodynamic second — this is a Rolls-Royce Dawn, not a circuit car, and the brief is to enrich the leading edge without disturbing the coachbuilt waftability the Dawn was engineered around. The blade traces a horizontal line several centimetres lower than the standard Mansory front-bumper undertray, then sweeps inboard at each corner so it does not encroach on the parking-sensor cones nor the approach angle a chauffeur needs across porte-cochère cobblestones and oceanfront-hotel ramps.

Visually it deepens the front graphic. From three-quarter view the Pantheon grille appears taller and more architectural; from straight-on the Spirit of Ecstasy stands above a pronounced carbon plinth that grounds the entire prow. The weave is aligned so that the twill diagonals run mirror-symmetric across the centreline, meeting at a vanishing point directly below the mascot — a small detail that separates a coachbuilt carbon piece from an aftermarket one.

There is a measured aero contribution. At elevated cruise the blade encourages cleaner airflow across the lower bumper apertures, which feed the twin-turbocharged 6.6-litre V12's intercoolers and the front brake-cooling ducts. The Dawn is a heavy car — well over two and a half tonnes — and any small improvement in front-brake cooling on a long alpine descent is welcome. Crucially, Mansory tunes the lip's profile so it does not generate the kind of sharp downforce that would change the magic-carpet ride character or lighten the rear at speed.

Compatibility & Fitment

Designed for the Rolls-Royce Dawn, 2015–2023, including Black Badge. Drophead convertible only — this lip is not a fit for Wraith, despite shared architecture, because the Dawn's front bumper geometry, ride height and lower-air-dam profile differ. The Front Lip III mounts to the Mansory front bumper assembly; it can be retrofitted to a car already wearing Mansory front-end carbon, or specified together with the bumper as part of the full programme. OEM front parking sensors and the optional ambient bonnet pinstripe remain fully active, and the lip respects the soft-top stowage path and coach-door opening arc — the latter only relevant in that the lip must not interfere with kerbside ingress when the car is parked tight against a kerb.

Installation & Reversibility

Allow approximately three to four hours for fitment by an experienced installer. The bumper does not need to be removed if the lip is being added to an already-fitted Mansory front bumper, but most ateliers prefer to drop the bumper to ensure the gasket strip seats cleanly along the mating face. Threaded inserts engage OEM-spec stainless fasteners at predefined points on the bumper underside; positional tolerance is checked with a laser line against the lower bumper crease before the final torque pass. A thin bead of automotive-grade urethane along the upper mating edge prevents water ingress and silences any high-speed flutter.

The fit is fully reversible: removing the lip leaves the OEM Mansory bumper unmodified other than the pre-engineered fastener points. We strongly recommend a Rolls-Royce-certified body shop or a Mansory-trained installer for fitment, both because the lacquer is fragile during handling and because correct alignment with the bumper crease is what separates a coachbuilt result from an aftermarket one.

Pairing within the Mansory Dawn programme

The Front Lip III is most often specified alongside its sibling carbon parts on the front end. The natural conversation piece is the more conservative Front Lip II — the same family, one notch dialled back. Owners choosing between the two usually settle on Lip II for cars wearing factory Rolls-Royce coachwork colours where restraint is the brief, and Lip III for cars in bespoke metallics, two-tone schemes or any specification where the front graphic should read as commissioned rather than catalogued. We rarely combine the two; the bumper is engineered to receive one or the other.

Lip III pairs especially well with the air intake splitter in the lower bumper apertures — the two carbon elements share the same lacquer and weave alignment, so the lower bumper reads as one continuous carbon graphic rather than a collection of trims. For owners who want the front end to take on a true theatre-of-arrival character after dusk, the ambiente grille and front bumper illumination sits above the lip and turns the whole prow into a slow, glowing hand-shake when the Dawn rolls into a hotel forecourt.

Maintenance & Durability

The Dawn lives an open-air life, and the Front Lip III lives at the part of the car most exposed to gravel rash, road salt and direct ultraviolet light. The factory lacquer is UV-stabilised, but we still recommend a high-grade ceramic coating applied within the first month of fitment — it adds a sacrificial layer that protects the clear-coat from oxidation and makes road-film removal far gentler.

Wash the lip with a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft, deep-pile mitt; alkaline traffic-film removers, ammonia-based glass cleaners and abrasive sponges are the three things that age lacquered carbon prematurely. A carnauba wax can be used on top of the ceramic if the owner enjoys the warmer optical depth, though most Mansory clients leave the ceramic alone. If a stone chip catches the lower edge, the panel can usually be repaired in situ by re-lacquering the affected zone — a full re-spray is rarely required because the weave below the clear is undisturbed.

Lead Time & Warranty

Lead time is typically four to eight weeks from order confirmation to dispatch, reflecting the prepreg cure cycle and the multi-stage lacquer schedule. Each panel carries a twelve-month warranty against manufacturing defects.

FAQ

Q: How is Lip III different from Lip II?
A: Lip III projects further forward and lower, with a more sculpted lower edge. Lip II is the more conservative sibling, closer to a factory-look chin spoiler. Both are autoclave carbon; the choice is purely visual.

Q: Will the Front Lip III fit a Wraith with the same engine?
A: No. The Wraith and Dawn share many cues but the front bumper geometry and ride height differ. This lip is engineered for the Dawn drophead bumper only.

Q: Does it work on a Black Badge?
A: Yes. The lip fits all Dawn variants 2015–2023, including Black Badge with its darker chrome treatment. We can also specify the lip in satin-matt lacquer to match the Black Badge mood.

Q: Will it interfere with the soft-top stowage cycle?
A: No. The lip sits on the front bumper, far from the rear deck and the soft-top mechanism. The fabric top opens and closes normally.

Q: How does it cope with sun on a parked drophead?
A: The lacquer is UV-stabilised and the autoclave cure leaves no resin pockets to yellow. We strongly recommend a ceramic coating on top — it materially extends the life of the gloss on an open-air car.

Q: Can I have it in raw weave instead of lacquered?
A: We can quote a satin-matt lacquer or a flat clear, both of which preserve the visible weave. A truly unlacquered carbon surface is not recommended on a Rolls-Royce coachbuilt panel because it will dull within a season.
