Roof panel with 3 position lights HELLA Mansory Carbon for Mercedes G-class G500 / AMG G63 W463A

The three-light HELLA roof panel is the flagship variant of the Mansory carbon roof program for the W463A G-class — the spec owners pick when they want the boxy roofline to read busier, more aggressive and more "expedition build" than the cleaner 2-light sibling. The panel laminates onto the front edge of the factory roof, replacing the painted blank with a 3K-twill carbon shell that channels three HELLA position-light pods across the leading edge in a tight, evenly spaced cluster. Position the part within the kit through the parent: Mansory Carbon Body Kit for Mercedes G-class W463A G500/G63. It pairs visually with a roof wing at the rear and a high front protective frame at the nose, finishing the upper silhouette of the widebody car.

Construction & Materials

The shell is a single autoclave-cured laminate, not a two-piece bonded skin. The carbon is 3K twill on the show face, with a unidirectional inner ply running fore-aft for stiffness across the three light cut-outs — important because three pods, not two, means more material removed from the load path. The HELLA bezels are bonded into stepped recesses with structural urethane, so the lens face sits flush with the carbon and the gasket seals against a moulded lip rather than against raw weave.

  • Show ply: 3K twill 2x2, weave aligned along the longitudinal centreline
  • Inner plies: 2x 200gsm unidirectional carbon, fore-aft fibre orientation
  • Cure cycle: autoclave, 6 bar, ~120 °C, full prepreg lay-up
  • Wall thickness: 2.0–2.4 mm panel, 3.5–4.0 mm around the three light cut-outs
  • Total panel weight: 4.6–4.9 kg complete with HELLA pods, harness and bezels
  • Mounting: factory roof channel + 3M VHB high-temp tape perimeter + four hidden M5 stainless studs into existing roof threaded points
  • Lens hardware: HELLA OEM amber/white position lamps, polycarbonate UV-stable lens, IP67-rated housing
  • Finish: triple-coat clear polyurethane lacquer, UV-inhibited, gloss as standard, matte satin available on request

Design & Visual Function

The triple-light geometry is the whole point of this part. Where the 2-light variant uses a symmetric pair flanking the cabin centreline, the 3-light cluster places one pod on the centreline with two outboard pods, evenly spaced across the front edge of the roof. The eye reads it as continuous LED bar rather than a pair of separate lamps — at night the three beams overlap into a single flat-topped wash that visibly widens the front of the car from a hundred metres away. From a quarter-front angle you also see the HELLA badge on the centre pod, a detail many G-owners specifically request because it signals OEM-grade lighting hardware rather than aftermarket no-name LED bars.

Total LED lumen output across the three pods is 540–620 lm at the lens (HELLA position-mode, not high beam), with a 2A continuous draw and a brief 3A peak when first switched as the constant-current driver settles. The wider lit footprint also balances the visual mass of a high roof wing or roof spoiler at the rear — without the front cluster the silhouette tips toward the tailgate. Owners running a high front protective frame at the nose particularly like the 3-pod variant because the busier upper line echoes the busier front-bumper line, keeping the proportions consistent across the whole upper deck.

Geometry-wise, the three pods are mounted symmetrically around the longitudinal axis: the centre pod is a true centreline pod, and the two outer pods sit equidistant from it. The wiring is concealed inside the carbon shell, exiting through a single grommet at the rear edge of the panel — which means from no angle do you see a loom, a connector or a heat-shrink joint. The carbon weave runs forward through all three cut-outs without break or splice line, so the panel reads as one continuous piece rather than three lamps glued onto a roof.

Compatibility & Fitment

Mercedes-Benz G-class W463A generation (2018+ 4th-gen, the current Mercedes internal model code). Confirmed fitment for G500, G550, G400d, G350d and AMG G63 (M177 4.0 V8 BT). Pre-2018 W463 (the original boxy car, 1979–2018) is not compatible — the roof skin geometry and rain-channel positions are different and the HELLA cut-outs will not align. The W463A Gronos kit uses its own dedicated roof panel (slug roof-panel-gronos-mansory-carbon-for-mercedes-g-class-g500-amg-g63-w463a, see cross-link below) and is not interchangeable with this 3-light HELLA panel. Both LHD and RHD bodies fit, since the panel sits on the cabin centreline and is symmetric. Cars optioned with the factory electric sliding sunroof retain full sunroof travel — the panel sits forward of the sunroof aperture and the four mounting studs avoid the sunroof rails. Hard-top metal-roof cars are also fine. Auxiliary roof-rack systems (Front Runner, Rhino-Rack) need to clear the rear edge of the panel by at least 80 mm; if the rack uses the factory roof rails and rear feet, clearance is fine on every measured car.

Installation & Reversibility

Plan 4–5 hours for a clean install at a Mansory-trained body shop, longer if the shop has not fitted the 3-light variant before — the loom is a different routing than the 2-light. The panel arrives with the HELLA pods already bonded in and the harness pre-loomed, so the shop work is: clean and degrease the factory roof, dry-fit the panel, mark the four M5 stud positions against the existing factory threaded points, lay the 3M VHB perimeter tape, route the harness through the existing roof grommet (shared with the antenna), tap into the factory parking-light circuit on the body-side fusebox, torque the four M5 studs to 4 Nm and bed the perimeter tape under firm hand pressure for at least sixty seconds along its full length.

The current draw at 3A peak fits comfortably inside the factory parking-light circuit fuse (10A on most W463A wiring sets) so no separate relay or auxiliary fuse is needed for stock running, but if the owner is also running auxiliary frame-mounted lights on the same circuit a separate 15A relay-fed feed is recommended. Reversibility is good: the four M5 studs go into existing threaded points (not new drilled holes), and the 3M VHB tape comes off cleanly with a heat-gun pass and isopropyl wipe. The factory roof skin underneath is left intact and is repainted only if the shop wants a perfect blank-roof restoration — most owners simply leave the original paint as-is under the panel.

Pairing within the Mansory G-class W463A G500/G63 programme

The 3-light HELLA roof panel is most often specified alongside parts that match its busier, more aggressive read. Owners cross-shopping the cleaner sibling should compare against Roof panel with 2 position lights HELLA — same panel geometry and same HELLA hardware, but a symmetric pair instead of a triple cluster, lower current draw and a slightly cleaner front-edge line. The natural Gronos-spec alternative is Roof panel Gronos with 2 lights, which uses different bezel geometry and a Gronos-specific carbon weave alignment for cars built around the Gronos visual language. To finish the upper silhouette at the rear, pair with High roof wing with side flaps — the side flaps and the triple front cluster together create a clearly framed roofline read from any quarter angle.

Maintenance & Durability

Treat the lacquered carbon shell exactly like the rest of the body — neutral-pH shampoo, two-bucket wash, clean microfibre, microfibre drying towels never abrasive sponges. The HELLA pods are IP67 sealed so high-pressure car-wash cycles are fine, but avoid spraying directly into the bezel-to-carbon joint at less than 30 cm — keep the lance back. A carnauba paste wax once a quarter is enough on lacquered carbon; ceramic coatings (1H-3H) work and extend the service interval to 12–18 months. Stay away from ammonia-based glass cleaners, dishwasher detergents and abrasive scrubbing pads — those kill the lacquer and dull the weave. Stone chips on the leading edge are repairable: sand the chip flat with 1500/2000-grit, fill with two-pack clear lacquer, flat and polish. Expected lifespan of a properly cared-for panel is 12+ years; the HELLA modules are independently serviceable and a replacement bulb/LED module can be popped in without removing the panel from the roof.

Lead Time & Warranty

Lead time runs 3–5 weeks because the panel is autoclave-cured to order and the HELLA hardware is bonded after lacquer cure, not before — this gives the cleanest bezel-to-carbon joint but adds a fixed cure window to the schedule. The 12-month manufacturing warranty covers delamination, voids in the laminate, lacquer failure, HELLA module electrical failure and any fitment issue traceable to a tooling fault. Damage from impact, off-road hits, abrasion, ammonia cleaners or incorrect installation is not covered.

FAQ

Q: Does the 3-light variant draw enough current to need a relay?
A: Not for stock running — 2A continuous, 3A peak fits inside the factory 10A parking-light fuse. Add a relay only if you are stacking auxiliary frame lights on the same circuit.

Q: Will the panel clear my factory electric sunroof?
A: Yes. The panel sits forward of the sunroof aperture and the four mounting studs are positioned to avoid the sunroof rails. Sunroof travel is unchanged.

Q: Is the HELLA badge visible from outside the car?
A: Yes — on the centre pod, visible from the front and quarter-front angles. Many owners ask for this specifically.

Q: Can I switch from 2-light to 3-light later?
A: No — the carbon shell is moulded around the bezel cut-outs, so the panel is bought as a single 2-light or 3-light unit. The factory roof under it is untouched, so swapping the whole panel is straightforward but not a field upgrade.

Q: How is the wiring concealed?
A: The loom runs inside the carbon shell and exits through a single grommet at the rear edge of the panel — no visible cabling, no exposed connectors.

Pair the 3-light HELLA roof panel with a high roof wing and a high front protective frame to complete the busiest upper-silhouette spec in the W463A program. To order, message WhatsApp +44 7488 818 747 or write to [email protected].
