Instead of a wholesale paddle replacement, Mansory engineered a precision-fit carbon shell that bonds over the factory paddle and lengthens its reach, so the driver can downshift mid-corner without rotating the wrist away from the rim. It is a tactile rather than visual upgrade — and on the W465, where the steering geometry is fractionally different from the outgoing W463A, the extension dimensions had to be recalculated from scratch.
Mansory's interior brief for Gronos W465 was to retain every OEM safety and electronic interface on the steering wheel — the airbag boundary, the multifunction switch packs, the haptic shift triggers and their MOSFET-driven feedback — and to refine only the surfaces the driver actually contacts. That ruled out a full paddle swap, which would have meant breaking the clip retention and re-routing the contact spring. The chosen path was an OEM-replacement-class extension: a carbon outer shell, profiled to nest onto the factory paddle, fixed by structural acrylic adhesive, lifting the contact face outward and slightly downward. The result feels like an extended factory paddle, not an aftermarket bolt-on.
The shells are laid up from 2x2 twill prepreg at approximately 200 g/m², the same weave family used across the visible Gronos cabin trim, so the paddle pattern matches the dashboard inserts and the door pulls without a perceptible weave-pitch shift. Cure is performed in autoclave at 130 °C under 6 bar, with vacuum-bag consolidation, producing a void content under 1.5% and residual moisture below 0.4%. Steering-interface ergonomics conform to ECE-R21 for interior protrusions and to the SAE J287 reach envelope, so the extension does not foul any seated 95th-percentile hand position on the rim.
Surface options are raw weave under satin clear (matte handfeel, dries quickly after cabin condensation), or gloss-coated for a more reflective finish that visually echoes the carbon dashboard inlays. A forged-carbon variant with marbled chopped-strand pattern is available on request as part of a wider cabin commission.
The W465 generation entered production with significantly revised steering column packaging compared with the previous G-Class. The paddle clip footprint is narrower, the contact spring sits closer to the rim spoke, and the haptic actuator is integrated into the paddle body rather than mounted behind it. The Mansory Extended Shift Paddles are dimensioned specifically for this new architecture and fit the W465 G 500, G 580 and AMG G 63 variants delivered into the Gronos programme. They are not cross-compatible with the outgoing W463/W463A steering wheels, which use a different paddle profile.
The paddles ship as part of the wider Mansory Gronos kit for W465 but can also be commissioned as a standalone cabin-only upgrade for owners who already have the exterior package or who want to preserve a stock exterior with a discreet cabin refresh.
Installation is mechanical and adhesive only — the OEM paddle is not removed, no electrical connector is unplugged, and no harness pin is touched. The shell is positioned over the factory paddle, registered against the inboard edge for alignment, and bonded with a pre-applied film of 3M VHB 5952 acrylic foam tape. VHB 5952 was selected for its tolerance to elevated cabin temperatures (sustained 90 °C without creep) and its compatibility with the polycarbonate-blend skin of the OEM paddle. Clip retention of the paddle to the column remains entirely OEM — the extension does not load the clip in any new direction.
Total install time is 25–35 minutes per pair, performed in a clean cabin at room temperature. After bonding, the recommended dwell is 24 hours before first hard pull on the paddle, to allow the VHB acrylic to reach full cohesive strength. No alignment fixture is required; the registration features on the inside face of the shell index off the factory paddle geometry.
The functional point of the paddles is reach. On the OEM W465 wheel the upshift paddle face sits roughly at the 2 o'clock spoke; reaching it from a 9-and-3 grip requires a small thumb-and-finger reach across the rim. The extended shell projects the contact face outward by 22–28 mm (variable by paddle hand — the upshift side is longer than the downshift to compensate for the natural asymmetry of the right-hand pull) so the contact face sits just inside the natural 9-and-10 o'clock grip. The driver can shift without breaking grip on the rim, which is the practical difference between a fast hands-on-wheel sequence through a series of bends and the small mid-corner pause that comes with a reach across the rim.
Edge profile is rounded with a 1.5 mm chamfer and a fine bead-blast micro-texture on the contact face, so finger purchase is consistent in dry conditions and after a workout-grade sweat session at the wheel. The shells are mass-balanced to within 2 g per pair so the haptic feedback feel of the OEM paddle is preserved.
Care is straightforward — wipe with a microfibre cloth dampened in isopropanol at 70% or lower, no abrasive polishes, no silicone-based interior detailers (silicone migrates into the satin clearcoat over time and can cause haze). Avoid alcohol-based hand sanitiser left as a residue on the paddle face: prolonged contact dulls the satin clear. Under normal cabin use the carbon shells should remain visually unchanged for the lifetime of the vehicle.
