Engine Bonnet Emblem with Logo — Mansory Carbon for Mercedes-Benz GLS X167

The Mansory engine-bonnet emblem is the piece that announces the car before the grille does. Sitting at the leading edge of the bonnet near the cowl — exactly where the Mercedes star or hood ornament traditionally lives — it is a small lacquered carbon plaque with the Mansory wordmark inset, claiming the most prominent square centimetre of the entire bodywork. Within the broader Mansory Body Kit for Mercedes GLS X167 programme, this is the bonnet member of the branding triplet (logo for the grill mask, engine-bonnet emblem, rear-hatch emblem) and it is the first thing seen by anyone standing in front of the GLS — whether the car wears the upright louvre grille of the GLS 450 / 580 or the Panamericana grille of the AMG GLS 63 with its V8 BiTurbo soundtrack waiting behind.

Construction & Materials

The bonnet emblem is a small but exacting carbon piece. Mansory treats the part as jewellery rather than trim — every fibre orientation is set, the lacquer cap is built up in multiple coats and the underside is machined flat so it sits true on the OEM emblem cone without rocking. Weight is incidental — between 50 and 80 grams depending on plaque format — but the build sequence is the same disciplined coachbuilt routine Mansory applies to a full bonnet panel.

  • 2x2 twill prepreg carbon laminate, fibre orientation aligned with the bonnet centreline so the weave reads as a continuation of the panel beneath.
  • Autoclave-cured at controlled pressure and temperature — full consolidation, void-free, no resin pooling.
  • Plaque thickness 2.0–2.8 mm at the perimeter; dimensions tuned to the OEM Mercedes star footprint so the emblem reads at the right scale from a standing distance.
  • Inset Mansory wordmark — recessed, painted in body-tone or signature deep matte (specify on order) and sealed under the same UV-stable clear that protects the surrounding weave.
  • Deep-gloss UV-stable lacquer with extended weathering schedule — the bonnet sees more direct UV than any other panel on the car, so the clear is engineered for that exposure.
  • Mounting interface: a precision-machined receiver that drops onto the OEM bonnet emblem cone (the same conical post that retains the factory Mercedes star) plus a perimeter ring of 3M VHB acrylic foam tape for vibration damping and back-up retention.
  • Underside finished, edges deburred and lacquered — visible only with the bonnet open at a service interval but specified to the same standard as the show face.
  • Total assembly weight 50–80 g — within OEM emblem mass, no impact on bonnet damper geometry or gas-strut behaviour.

Design & Visual Function

This emblem is a statement of authorship. Owners decide whether it replaces the Mercedes three-pointed star outright or co-exists with it — Mansory's view is that a fully recommissioned Mansory GLS reads cleanest when the bonnet wordmark stands alone, declaring the coachbuilt provenance to anyone walking up to the car; other owners prefer a quieter setup where the Mercedes star is retained on the grille and the Mansory emblem on the bonnet, giving a layered identity. Either route is supported — the part fits the same OEM cone the factory star uses, so the swap is mechanical, not destructive.

Placement near the cowl is deliberate. From the driver's seat the emblem sits in lower peripheral view through the windscreen, never intrusive. From outside, standing in front of the car at conversational distance, the plaque is at eye-line with anyone of average height — the first detail registered, before chrome, before grille, before headlamps. Weave alignment is set so the twill diagonals echo the bonnet's own pressed character lines, and the lacquer's depth-of-field reads against any paint colour from Obsidian Black to Diamond White Bright.

Bonnet motion is engineered, not assumed. The emblem profile is low — well under 10 mm proud of the bonnet skin — so it clears the windscreen wipers in their park position even when the bonnet is opened to full upright on its gas struts. There is no fouling against cowl trim, against the wiper arms or against the rubber bonnet seal. The plaque rides with the bonnet through every cycle of the bonnet hinge, including the GLS's pedestrian-protection lift mode where applicable.

Compatibility & Fitment

Built for the Mercedes-Benz GLS X167 generation, model years 2019 onwards including post-MY2024 facelift, in every drivetrain and trim: GLS 450 with the inline-6 plus EQ Boost mild-hybrid, GLS 580 with the M177 4.0 V8 BiTurbo, and the AMG GLS 63 with the higher-output V8 BiTurbo and around 603 hp. The OEM bonnet shell is shared across the trim ladder — Mercedes does not change the bonnet between GLS 450 and AMG GLS 63 — so the emblem fits identically across the range. The mounting interface is the OEM bonnet emblem cone, the same conical post Mercedes uses to retain the factory star, which means no drilling, no adhesive bridging, no bonnet-skin modification. Pedestrian-protection bonnet lift, AIRMATIC suspension behaviour, and panoramic-roof drainage are all unaffected because the part lives entirely on the bonnet skin.

Installation & Reversibility

Roughly 30 minutes for a careful first-time owner with a clean cloth, isopropyl alcohol, a plastic trim pry tool and a calm bonnet. The factory Mercedes star is lifted off the OEM cone (it is retained by friction and a perimeter foam pad — a plastic trim wedge releases it without paint contact). The cone and the surrounding paint are cleaned with isopropyl, then dried. The Mansory emblem is dry-fitted first to confirm orientation — Mansory wordmark horizontal, weave diagonals reading clean against the bonnet centreline. The VHB ring is then exposed and the emblem is pressed home onto the cone, held under firm thumb pressure for thirty seconds. The car should rest 24 hours before its next wash to let the VHB cure to full strength.

Reversibility is total. The Mansory emblem can be lifted at any point in the future; the OEM cone is unchanged; the factory star can be reinstated; no paintwork is touched. For owners not comfortable with the swap, any Mercedes-certified body shop or Mansory-trained installer will fit the part in well under an hour, including a check-over of the bonnet seal and wiper arc.

Pairing within the Mansory GLS X167 programme

The bonnet emblem is one corner of a three-point Mansory branding system on the GLS — and the most architectural one, because it lives on a moving panel. The natural partners are the Mansory logo for the grill mask, which carries the wordmark across the front fascia, and the rear-hatch emblem, which closes the loop at the tailgate so the car reads Mansory from front, top and back. Owners specifying the full triplet often add the door welcome lights with Mansory logo as the fourth, illuminated layer — projecting the wordmark onto the ground at every door open, so the branding language extends from the bonnet at standing distance through the doors at approach to the tailgate at departure.

Maintenance & Durability

The bonnet position is the most UV-exposed real estate on the car, period. The emblem sits horizontally, catching mid-day sun for hours at a stretch, and that is the durability question every buyer should ask. Mansory's answer is the lacquer system itself — UV-stable clear formulated for extended bonnet exposure and run with a longer cure schedule than a fender or door-card part would receive. To extend that life further: a ceramic coat applied to the emblem and the surrounding bonnet at delivery is the single highest-leverage maintenance step. Wash with pH-neutral shampoo and a soft mitt only; never alkaline degreaser; never ammonia-based glass cleaner; never an abrasive sponge. PPF over the emblem is an option some owners pursue if the car covers high motorway mileage and stone-chipping at the leading edge of the bonnet is a real risk. If the lacquer is ever scuffed, repair is straightforward — the emblem is a single small part, replaceable in 30 minutes without bonnet refinishing.

Lead Time & Warranty

Lead time is 4–8 weeks from order to dispatch, set by Mansory's bespoke production cadence — every emblem is built to order with traceable laminate batch and lacquer build records. The part carries a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects (laminate voids, lacquer delamination, mounting-interface failure under normal use). Stone-strike, lacquer abrasion from improper cleaning, and accident damage are excluded.

FAQ

Q: Does this emblem replace the Mercedes three-pointed star, or sit alongside it?
A: Owner's choice. The OEM cone holds either part — most full-Mansory GLS builds replace the star outright so the bonnet reads pure Mansory, but you can equally retain the factory star elsewhere (some owners run the Mansory plaque on the bonnet and keep a Mercedes badge in the grille for a layered identity). The swap is fully reversible.

Q: Does it mount to the OEM bonnet emblem cone or does it require new fixings?
A: It mounts to the OEM cone — the same conical post that retains the factory star. A precision receiver drops over the cone and a VHB acrylic-foam ring backs it up. No drilling, no adhesives applied to the bonnet paint, no modification.

Q: Will it fit the AMG GLS 63 with the Panamericana grille?
A: Yes. The Panamericana grille only changes the front fascia — the bonnet shell is identical between GLS 450, GLS 580 and AMG GLS 63. Same OEM cone, same fitment.

Q: How long is the lead time and does it ship with mounting hardware?
A: 4–8 weeks build time. The emblem ships fitted with its receiver and a fresh VHB ring — everything you need for installation. We supply prep instructions and an isopropyl wipe in the box.

Q: Is the weave finish lacquered gloss only, or are matt/raw options available?
A: Default is deep-gloss UV-stable lacquer over 2x2 twill, which is the most weather-resilient finish for a bonnet position. Matt clear can be specified on request — please confirm at order so the build runs the correct lacquer schedule.
