Renault Launches Hybrid-Only Clio in the UK with Updated Styling and Features

Renault has given its fifth-generation Clio supermini a comprehensive update to keep it competitive before the arrival of the new pure-electric R4 and R5 models next year. The most significant change in the updated Clio E-Tech hybrid is its sharp and expressive front-end design, featuring a new “chiselled” bumper, full-LED headlights, and a boomerang-shaped LED daytime running light layout that starts at the outer edges of the headlights.

Renault has confirmed that the updated Clio will only be available in the UK with a petrol-electric full hybrid system, called the ‘E-Tech full hybrid.’ The powertrain comprises a 1.6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors that work together to produce up to 141bhp and a 0-62mph time of 9.3 seconds. Despite the small lithium-ion battery pack that can only be charged by the engine or brake energy regeneration, the Clio emits as low as 93g/km of CO2, making it kind on tax.

Apart from the new exterior design, the cabin technology has also been modernised, and the range includes a new Alpine-inspired trim level called “Esprit Alpine”. Esprit Alpine cars come with unique badging and exterior detailing, diamond-cut 17in alloy wheels that can be had with blue or grey centres, and French tricolours and red, white and blue stitching details on the sports seats.

Regardless of the trim level, the new Clio features more sustainable materials inside and no leather upholstery option. There is also a new ‘edgeless’ central touchscreen fitted with the Renault Easylink multimedia system with built-in navigation and WiFi smartphone replication. Adaptive cruise control with speed limiter, blind-spot warning, 9.3in touchscreen and 10in driver display come as standard with the Esprit Alpine trim level.

Renault has yet to announce the UK pricing for the updated Clio, but the company confirmed that the new models would go on sale soon. The facelifted Clio E-Tech hybrid is set to face fierce competition from other hybrid superminis in the UK market, such as the Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz. However, the Clio’s updated design and technology could help it maintain its position as a popular choice in the fiercely competitive supermini segment.
