The Mercedes-AMG GT R (chassis code C190, internally nicknamed "the Green Hell beast" after its Nürburgring development) is Affalterbach's most focused series-production sports car — a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive track weapon built on a bespoke aluminium spaceframe with a transaxle-mounted 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT, rear-wheel steering, nine-mode AMG TRACTION CONTROL, active front-aero flap and an M178 hand-built 4.0-litre hot-V biturbo V8 producing 585 hp and 700 Nm. Production ran 2016–2021 at Affalterbach before being succeeded by the AMG GT Black Series (730 hp, flat-plane crank) and, in 2024, the all-new AMG GT C192. This guide covers every meaningful upgrade available for the C190 AMG GT R — body kits from Brabus, Mansory, RENNtech, Manhart, Prior Design and Mcchip-DKR, forged wheels, Stage 1/2 performance work on the M178, interior and — critically for this specific collector-track car — an honest analysis of how each tuning category affects resale value.
The AMG GT R is built on the C190 aluminium spaceframe — a bespoke AMG architecture used exclusively by the 2015–2021 AMG GT Coupe and Roadster family (GT, GT S, GT C, GT R, GT R Pro, GT Black Series). It is not a shared platform: the C190 is structurally unrelated to any other Mercedes, and in particular has nothing in common with the MRA platform of the X290 AMG GT 4-Door Coupe or the MHA-class architecture of the S-Class and GLS ranges. The engine is a front-mid-mounted M178 hot-V V8 (turbos located inside the V between the cylinder banks for shorter intake runs and quicker throttle response), with the 7-speed SPEEDSHIFT DCT dual-clutch gearbox mounted at the rear axle as a transaxle — the same layout used by the Porsche 911 Turbo, Aston Martin Vantage and historically the Chevrolet C5 Corvette. This long-bonnet / rear-transaxle layout delivers the GT R's 47:53 front-rear weight distribution and the unusually low polar moment that makes the car so responsive at turn-in. The spaceframe is approximately 92% aluminium with magnesium front-deck panels and a carbon-fibre torque tube running from engine to gearbox. Because the platform is unique, aftermarket parts catalogues are C190-specific: parts developed for the X290 4-Door, the W222 S-Class, or any other Mercedes will not fit. Always verify the chassis-code tag on any body kit or hard part before purchase.
Brabus 700 programme. Brabus's C190 GT R programme wraps the Affalterbach track-weapon in a restrained but unmistakably Brabus carbon suite: a carbon front-lip spoiler that extends the factory front splitter, carbon flics on the front-bumper vents, carbon side-sill extensions, a carbon roof-mounted spoiler on the Gurney flap, and a carbon rear diffuser insert. Brabus wisely does not widebody the GT R — the factory fenders are already wide and the spaceframe cannot easily accept structural modifications. TÜV-certified. Full Brabus 700 aesthetic package typically runs £18,000–26,000 installed at Bottrop, with matching 20" / 21" Brabus Monoblock F forged wheels at a further £7,500–10,500. The 700 designation refers to the accompanying engine work — see the Performance section.
Mansory Carbonado. The Carbonado is Mansory's dramatic C190 AMG GT R programme and is by far the most aggressive visual treatment on the market. Full carbon widebody with substantial fender flares (adding approximately 50 mm of width each side at the rear), reshaped front apron with integrated LED daytime running lamps, a vented carbon bonnet, aggressive side skirts with winglets, a carbon ducktail spoiler and Mansory's signature integrated quad-exit exhaust. Cabin can be ordered in full diamond-stitched leather with carbon-fibre accents to match. Full Carbonado carbon spec lands at £95,000–140,000 depending on specification and is a statement piece popular with Dubai, Doha and Riyadh owners. Dramatically changes resale calculus — see the resale section below.
Prior Design PD800GT. Germany-based Prior Design's widebody conversion for the C190 is the most affordable route to a full widebody look. The PD800GT uses moulded composite rather than pre-preg carbon, with bolt-on fender extensions of approximately 40 mm per side, a new front apron with enlarged intakes, sculpted side skirts, a ducktail spoiler and a reshaped diffuser. Roughly £9,500–14,500 for the full composite kit — about one-seventh the cost of the Mansory equivalent. Well-respected build quality, clean fitment, and very popular in Eastern Europe, Poland and the UK. A strong choice for owners who want the widebody aesthetic at sensible cost.
RevoZport Razor GT R. Hong Kong-based RevoZport offers the Razor GT R composite programme — autoclaved pre-preg carbon front splitter with functional canards, a lightweight carbon bonnet with extraction vents, vented front fenders, carbon side skirts, a carbon ducktail and a race-profile rear diffuser. RevoZport's focus is track-oriented aero rather than visual drama, so the aesthetic is closer to the factory GT R Pro than to Mansory. £12,000–18,000 for the full carbon kit, with genuine aero benefit measurable at sustained track speeds.
Renntech, Mcchip-DKR and Darwinpro. Florida-based Renntech's C190 programme is primarily mechanical (see Performance) but includes a subtle carbon front splitter, side-skirt extensions and diffuser — the cleanest option for owners who want visible improvement without widebody drama. German tuner Mcchip-DKR offers a Stage 1/2 package plus an understated aero upgrade. Darwinpro (Hong Kong) produces a Renaissance-style aero kit for the C190 at middle-of-the-road pricing, popular in the Asian and Australian markets.
Factory GT R wheels are forged 19" front / 20" rear — staggered, 10.0J front and 12.0J rear. The factory spec is technically excellent and most owners simply refurbish rather than replace. For owners who want an aesthetic change or step up to 20"/21", genuine forged construction is mandatory — cast wheels do not survive the M178's 700 Nm torque and the GT R's track-capable cornering loads.
Brabus Monoblock F / Monoblock Z. The definitive C190 wheel. Available in 20 × 10.0J ET50 front and 21 × 12.0J ET54 rear with 275/35 R20 front and 325/30 R21 rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Pilot Sport 4S, matching the factory staggered geometry exactly. Forged from 6061-T6 billet in Platinum Edition, liquid-titanium, satin black and bespoke two-tone diamond-turned finishes. Monoblock Z (Y-spoke) and Monoblock F (five twin-spoke classic) are the two signature patterns for the C190. Approximately £8,500–11,500 per set.
HRE P101 / Classic 300M. American-forged multi-piece with comprehensive colour and finish customisation. 20" front / 21" rear spec in matching 10.0J / 12.0J widths. HRE is the choice for owners who want finishes outside the Brabus catalogue — any PPG colour on centre disc, lip or hardware. Typical lead time 8–10 weeks.
ADV.1 ADV5.0 / ADV10R. Miami-based ADV.1 offers concave aggressive patterns that pair well with Mansory Carbonado or Prior Design PD800GT widebody conversions. Premium pricing (£13,000–16,000 per set), 10–14-week lead times.
Vossen Forged Series / HRE FlowForm. Hybrid-forged flow-form wheels — more affordable than true billet-forged construction and visually excellent. Suitable for factory-power or Stage 1 builds; not recommended for track-day abuse beyond 600 hp. For sustained track use on a tuned GT R, only true billet-forged wheels are appropriate.
RENNtech R2 Package (585 → 615 hp). RENNtech's C190 Stage 1 flash plus a high-flow carbon intake and 200-cell sport-catalyst downpipes lifts the M178 to a reliable 615 hp and 760 Nm on 98 RON pump fuel. Approximately £6,500 installed. Preserves the factory turbos, intercoolers and exhaust backbone — a measured, reversible upgrade that retains driveability and the factory exhaust note signature. Paired with a full Akrapovic Evolution system, the GT R runs 625 hp / 770 Nm and gains approximately 8 kg of weight saving.
Brabus 700 (585 → 700 hp). Brabus's flagship M178 programme combines revised turbochargers with larger compressor wheels, higher-flow intake and sport-cat downpipes, revised intercoolers and a comprehensive ECU / TCU calibration. Quoted output 700 hp and 830 Nm. Approximately £22,000–28,000 installed at Bottrop, with Brabus's two-year warranty on the modified driveline — a meaningful financial-risk buffer against the C190's expensive engine. 0–100 km/h drops from 3.6 s to approximately 3.3 s; top speed rises to 325 km/h.
Manhart GTR 700. German tuner Manhart's C190 programme targets the same 700 hp figure as Brabus at slightly lower cost. Package includes revised turbocharger internals, high-flow intake, 200-cell downpipes, ECU calibration and a Manhart stainless-steel exhaust with carbon tips. Approximately £18,000–22,000. Quoted peak output 700 hp / 850 Nm. Manhart builds consistently and the work is respected in German-market GT R circles.
Mcchip-DKR Stage 1/2. The affordable performance route. Stage 1 ECU flash alone yields approximately 630 hp / 780 Nm at roughly £2,500 turnkey. Stage 2 adds downpipes and a revised intake for 660 hp / 820 Nm at approximately £5,500. Both stages are fully reversible. The Mcchip-DKR Stage 1 is the single highest value-for-power upgrade on the C190 platform for owners who don't want to spend Brabus-level money.
Exhausts. The Akrapovic Evolution titanium system with carbon tips is the benchmark — lighter than factory by approximately 8 kg, measurably improved exhaust note, typically £7,500–9,500 installed. Capristo offers a valved titanium system with remote wireless volume control. iPE Innotech is a popular valved stainless option at lower cost. All three retain factory rear-bumper apertures and are cleanly reversible before resale.
Brakes. Factory GT R standard brakes (390 mm front, 6-piston AMG callipers) are excellent to Stage 1 territory. Beyond 650 hp or for genuine track use, the factory-optional AMG Carbon Ceramic Composite (402 mm front, 6-piston) is the single best upgrade — and is uniquely resale-positive on the C190 GT R (see resale section). Aftermarket Brembo GT-R 410 mm 6-piston or PowerBrake Big Brake Kit are alternative routes for owners whose car did not leave the factory with the ceramic option.
The GT R factory interior is already at a high level — AMG Performance seats in Dinamica microfibre with yellow accent stitching, alcantara on the steering wheel and door uppers, carbon-fibre trim on dashboard and centre console. For a full-build, Brabus Fine Leather offers a complete re-trim in any Nappa or semi-aniline hide at £14,000–22,000 at Bottrop. Carlex Design in Poland delivers comparable quality at approximately 40% lower cost. The AMG Track Package — a factory option on later cars — replaces the standard seats with full buckets, adds a roll-bar and fire-extinguisher mounting, and is worth specifying on any car intended for serious track use. For aftermarket routes, Recaro Pole Position ABE or Sparco SPX buckets with appropriate mounts are well-respected options.
Unlike a mass-production Mercedes, the C190 AMG GT R is rapidly transitioning from "used performance car" to "modern collector". Low production numbers (approximately 6,000 units total across all global markets), the halo M178 hand-built engine, Nürburgring development heritage and the successor GT Black Series climbing past £500,000 at auction in 2024–2025 mean that resale value of any modification is worth taking seriously. Reversible modifications — wheels, exhaust, Stage 1 ECU flash, interior accessories — have near-zero resale impact provided the original parts are retained and available for the next buyer; on a collector car, the original specification is always the reference point. Full widebody body kits such as Mansory Carbonado or Prior Design PD800GT typically cut resale by 15–25%: they are largely irreversible because fender modifications require cutting, and the pool of future buyers who actively want a Mansory widebody is smaller than the pool of buyers who want a factory-spec GT R. ECU remaps — especially Stage 2 and above — void the factory Mercedes drivetrain warranty where still applicable and, more damagingly for collector value, create provenance concerns; expect a 10–15% discount from knowledgeable buyers unless the original ECU calibration can be flashed back before sale. Tasteful forged wheels in OEM sizes are resale-neutral and may even add value if the original factory wheels are retained in good condition. Carbon-ceramic brakes are uniquely resale-positive on the GT R — at auction in 2024–2025 cars with the factory ceramic option have traded at roughly a 5–8% premium over iron-brake equivalents, reflecting both the £10k+ factory option cost and the track-credibility signal. The rule for a C190 GT R is simple: keep all modifications reversible, retain every original part in labelled storage, and never cut the spaceframe. Track cars with carbon ceramics and clean documentation are now appreciating; widebody Mansory conversions are not.
The GT R (585 hp) is the sweet-spot car for most buyers: substantially more capable than the GT S or GT C, dramatically more affordable than the GT R Pro or Black Series, and it retains all of the defining GT R features — M178 hot-V V8, 9-mode AMG TRACTION CONTROL, active front-aero flap, rear-wheel steering, KW adjustable coilovers. The GT R Pro (2019+, approximately 750 units globally) adds stiffer coilovers with external reservoirs, additional carbon aero including a sculpted front splitter, a manually-adjustable rear wing and minor chassis bracing — a track-specialist spec that commands roughly a 25–35% premium over standard GT R on the 2024–2025 used market. The GT Black Series (730 hp, flat-plane crank M178 LS3, approximately 1,700 units) is now a fully-fledged collector asset trading north of £500,000 and is a different investment profile entirely. For a driver's car with upside, the standard GT R remains the intelligent choice; for the serious collector, seek out a GT R Pro with full documentation.
Absolutely not, and vice versa. The C190 is a bespoke aluminium-spaceframe two-door sports car and shares no body panels or structural dimensions with any other Mercedes model. The X290 AMG GT 4-Door Coupe (2018–2024) uses the completely different MRA platform shared with the E-Class W213 and CLS C257; its body kits, bumpers, bonnets and diffusers cannot be adapted to the C190. Similarly, parts engineered for the W222 / W223 S-Class, the GLS X166/X167, or any other Mercedes will not fit the C190. Always confirm the chassis-code tag on any body kit — "AMG GT body kit" is insufficient: a C190-specific fitment declaration is mandatory. Brabus, Mansory, Prior Design, RevoZport, RENNtech and Manhart all produce explicit C190 programmes, and these are the primary safe routes.
Partly. The 2019 facelift updated the front bumper (revised grille pattern and lower-intake geometry), the digital instrument cluster, MBUX infotainment and small interior details; mechanically the M178 and SPEEDSHIFT DCT were unchanged. Front-bumper-replacement body kits (Brabus, Mansory Carbonado, Prior Design PD800GT) are specific to either pre-facelift or facelift and cannot be cross-fitted — always confirm with the tuner before ordering. Rear diffusers, side skirts, exhausts, wheels and all performance upgrades (RENNtech R2, Brabus 700, Manhart GTR 700, Mcchip-DKR, Akrapovic, Capristo) are common across both generations. When buying a used donor, 2019 is the transition year and a small number of early-build 2019 cars carry pre-facelift bumpers — verify by VIN and visual inspection rather than by registration year alone.
Most C190 GT R cars are now outside the original factory three-year warranty window, which simplifies the calculation considerably. For cars still within factory warranty, a RENNtech R2 ECU flash is technically reversible — a flash back to the factory map before a dealer visit leaves no visible fingerprint on the M178's ECU — but we never recommend reversal as a deliberate strategy, and if a dealer detects the modification the entire drivetrain warranty can be voided. The safer options are: (a) the Brabus 700 programme, which includes a two-year Brabus warranty on the modified driveline covering engine, turbos and gearbox; (b) the Manhart GTR 700, similarly warrantied; or (c) waiting out the factory warranty before committing to Stage 2 work. Body kits, wheels, exhausts and interior upgrades do not affect drivetrain warranty in any market we service. For the collector-minded owner, the cleanest approach remains Stage 1 RENNtech (reversible), forged wheels in OEM sizes (resale-neutral), Akrapovic exhaust (resale-neutral), and a subtle carbon aero programme (no body-panel cutting). Everything above that bracket trades performance for future resale.
